Arc Chair

Summer 2022

Arc Chair is a handmade rocking chair entirely composed of elements that follow a 3 meter curve. This rocker combines smooth profiles, and flush connections to create an aesthetically pleasing finished furniture piece.

Sketches for Arc Chair developed from quick and highly simplified profile studies of possible shapes. These shapes were inspired by many of the more famous, yet simple Scandinavian furniture pieces that exist in retail markets both past and present.

Ideation & Sketching

Desired Design Aesthetic: Clean lines, curved elements, and simple forms that draw the eye across the shape of the rocker.

Chair Connections: Connection points for the Arc Chair should be as minimalistic as possible to promote visual simplicity and elegance in the finished piece.

Design Goals: Identify a design language with which to move forward into the prototyping stage.

Form Diagrams

To help further define, and help to explain the shape of Arc Chair, form diagrams were created.

Design Goals: Find the correct angle between different elements of the chair to maximize comfortability while seated.

Scale Models

The shape of the chair was first tested at a much smaller scale before beginning construction.

Design Goals: Determine if the curved bottom of the rocker will provide enough stability, as well as the ability to rock.
